The Skinny on How Slot Machine Tournaments Work

I’m going to be looking at slot machine tournaments in various upcoming blogs. This first one will focus on the basics of slot machine tournaments. In other blogs, I’ll be considering slot machine tournament strategy, types of tournaments prizes and the different kinds of tournaments in which you can participate.

Slot Machine Tournament Rules

The rules for online slot machine tournaments tend to be fairly simple with some subtle variations occurring from tournament to tournament. Here are the five basic steps.

• Register for the tournament.
• Buy-in.
• Play the allotted credits within a specified amount of time.
• Re-buy if needed and allowed.
• Tournament ends and you may collect any winnings from the prize pool.

Some of the variations include the following:

• Time limits: Some tourneys run for 30 minutes and some for days.
• Spins rather than time: Some tournaments give you a certain number of spins and don’t have a time limit.
• Buy-in amounts: These vary.
• Credits: The standard number of credits allotted per player is 1,000 but it can be more.
• Re-buy: In some tournaments, you’re allowed to re-buy if you lose all your money before the tournament is over. Others do not allow re-buys.

Slot Machine Tournament Basic Terms

For those who are not familiar with slot machine tournament terms here are a few basic ones.

Buy-in:

Each tournament has an entry fee. That is your buy-in. When you buy-in, you are given a certain number of credits that you may use in the tournament. Everyone starts with the same number of credits.

Re-buy:

In some but not all slot machine tournaments, players may buy-in again and start all over. This is called a re-buy. If you do re-buy, then you must still finish the tournament in the specified amount of time.

Prize Pool:

The prize pool is the total amount of cash that will be given out to those who finish first, second and third in the tournament. The prize pool comes from the entry fees or buy-ins.

The Slot Machine Tournament

The online slot machine tournament that you enter will start at a specific time and will often have a designated stopping time too. Once play starts, you begin pumping credits into your machine. Of course, all players are using the same model of machine.

You should come to the tournament with some solid knowledge about the machine you’ll be utilizing and some sort of predetermined strategy. Although you are playing at your own pace, remember that you will most likely need to complete play within a certain amount of time.

Slot Machine Tournament Winners and Losers

At the end of the tournament, the slot machine totals of each player are tallied and the players who finish first, second and third are awarded prizes from the prize pool.

There are two types of prize pools. In the prize pool that players prefer, all of the buy-ins are divided between first through third place with first receiving 50% of the buy-in, second getting 30% and third being awarded 20%. The casino retains a small percentage of the buy-in, which ranges from 5% through 30%.

However, you may be competing for a guaranteed prize pool. The percentage distribution of prizes is the same as that for buy-ins, but the total prize amount is fixed. If the total prize pool is fixed at $10,000 but there is $20,000 in registrations, the casino keeps the other $10,000.

Thus, with a fixed guaranteed prize pool the winner would receive 50% or $5,000, the second-place finisher would get 30% or $3,000 and the third-place finisher 20% or $2,000. In contrast, in a buy-in tourney which has elicited $20,000 worth of buy-ins, the prizes break down in the following manner: first--$10,000; second-- $6000; and third-- $4,000.

From the example above, it’s clear that you should go with a buy-in tourney if you can.

Those are the basics concerning how slot machine tournaments work. In future blogs, there will be more on these exciting online events.
